Hailing from the northeastern United States where winters are fierce and harsh, the Maine Coon (also the state cat) is distinctively built for the conditions. He’s got long, thick fur, and huge paws that let him walk atop the snow, like we could if we had snowshoes.

This black and white tom could also be called a Tuxedo Cat due to how his furry body is marked. (Who said cats don’t do formal wear?) Manx cats are among the most interesting domestics in the world today. What makes them unique is that the Manx have a genetic predisposition to taillessness. This is not a trait that humans bred into them to get a particular result, but a naturally occurring one. As with anything, there are going to be variations. Some Manx have full tails, some have stubs, and others have no tail at all. What’s even more interesting, this can occur within the same litter!

Manx kittens can be grouped based on the length of their tails. Dimple rumpy cats or rumpies have no tail at all. Riser cats or rumpy risers have a small tail stub that can be seen when the kitty is happy. Stumpies have a partial tail – longer than a riser, not as long as a full tail. And last, is the tailed or longy with a full-length tail.

No one really knows why the Manx have no tails, though there are legends that try and explain the lack. For instance, one say that the Manx was playing when Noah called the animals to his Ark, and almost got left behind, and Noah accidentally clipped its tail in the door. Another legend puts forth that the Manx is the offspring between a regular domestic cat and a rabbit. That myth seeks to explain both the taillessness and the Manx cat’s long, powerful hind legs that can sometimes make it seem to hop. What is known for sure, is that the Manx hail from the Isle of Man. There, they are known as stubbin or kayt Manninagh in the local dialect. One of the oldest domestic breeds in the world, these delightful cats are common on the Isle, and come in two varieties – long and short-hair.

As for this delightful beauty, she was lovingly hand-crafted by the Italian toymaker Piutre with museum-quality materials and flawless attention to the smallest of details. Manx cats are known for their great intelligence and playful, if bizarre manner. For example, some Manx display dog-like tendencies – these like to play fetch.

As for Piutre’s lovely lady, she’ll do just about anything you want to do, so long as she can do it with you. If you look at her, she looks kind of round, doesn’t she? That’s normal for the Manx. The lack of a tail only makes it more obvious. Manx, like most domestic cats, can come not only in long or short-hair varieties, but in any combination of coat colors too. This one is a short-hair tuxedo cat (she looks so formal, but she’s just a bit goof), complete with bright and lively gold eyes that take in everything around her. Tortoise-shell (torties) calico, tabby and solid color cats also exist. Manx really are social cats, and love being with a family. This makes them loyal too, and so long as you treat this sweetheart right, you will never have cause to doubt that she adores you as much as the day is long.

If you’ve ever read 1001 Arabian Nights, you’ll know how rich the tales are, how engrossing, how delightful. The Middle East is as harsh a land as the imagination which spawned those tales is fertile. Even in modern society, it is not a place for the unwary. Still, there are oases of rare beauty, both artistic and natural. That such a dry and desolate land could turn out such an extraordinary cat as the Persian is beyond amazing. It is not clear exactly when the cat came from Persia (modern day Iran), probably along caravan routes. What is known is that she is one of the most popular breeds, if not the most popular breed today.

With a stocky and squat body, the Persian has large legs to hold her weight, and with her characteristic ‘flat face’, she makes a very unique, very striking image. Piutre’s chinchilla lady, with her soft golden eyes and luxurious fur, is painstakingly crafted from the finest materials, with the greatest care and consideration for quality.

What makes a chinchilla a chinchilla? How does she differ from white and silver cats? Silvers and Chinchillas are both basically white, with black tipping in their fur. The only difference is how much tipping is in their coat. This adorable lady’s chinchilla or tipped coat long and luxurious, silky soft to the touch. You’ll never want to stop petting her, and for her, that’s just fine.

Persians, like most other domestic cats, come in a variety of colors and markings. Their most dominant and recognizable feature however, is their open yet flat face. Genetic mutations in red and tabby Persians brought about the odd appearance, called Peke-face – named for Pekingese dogs, around the 1950s. After several decades though, that form began to fall out of favor due to the health risks caused by the short muzzle. As for their colors and markings, Persians come in almost all types. There are solids, silver and golden Persians, shaded and smoky Persians (grey and black intermixed), tabbies, bi-color (Calico and Tortoiseshell), and Himalayan (so named for their cross with the Siamese cat). All of these make for gorgeous felines, and while the silver may be considered the most ethereal, all Persians, especially the chinchilla are in a class all their own when it comes to beauty.

Persians, regardless of their color, are sweet-tempered and placid. They do well in stable, loving environments. In such places, they are well-behaved and very free with their affections. They make no bones letting you know how much they adore you. Turkish Angora cats are one of the world’s oldest naturally occurring breeds, hailing from Ankara, Turkey. Turks are playful, intelligent, loving and sociable, making them the perfect kitty for families with children or for a senior seeking a furry companion. In addition to being friendly and inquisitive, they are elegant and energetic. Long-bodied and graceful, they love to run, jump and leap about, often seeking out the highest point in your home from which to survey their domain. And make no mistake, it ‘is’ their domain. Sure, every cat has a certain quality that says, “I’m #1 and don’t you forget it.” But there’s something about the Turk that epitomizes this better than in other breed. Maybe it’s that unique, fine-boned face, or those dazzling eyes that in turn can win your heart and tell you what’s what.

Turks are prized no matter what colors they bear, though they can come in every shade from solid hues (white is the original, though now rarer form), to black, blue (grey), tabby, tabby-white and smoked varieties. Smoky turks are black with grey thrown in to create a lustrous, interesting contrast in their coat. Turk eyes can be blue, green or amber, and sometimes even bi-colored (one blue eye, one either amber or green). This striking image is not without its downside however. In white Turks, sometimes cats with bi-colored eyes can be totally or partially deaf. There are a lot of odd-eyed white cats who can hear just fine though, so it’s really a matter of luck and good genetics as to how your delightful cat will turn out. When it comes to playfulness and keeping busy, Turks are avid hunters. Moths, flies and other pests tend not to live very long once they enter your cat’s domain. Given their curious and willful nature, some who are “mechanically inclined” may necessitate you getting a sturdier cage if you have any birds or rodents in the house.
