You’ve helped out in the kitchen, right? When your mom makes dinner, she always tells you to wash your hands, and to make sure the counters are wiped down, and the dishes are washed or put in the dishwasher after being rinsed. Wanna know why? This guy right here. Salmonella. This vaguely rod-shaped critter with red appendages can give you a really bad day if you don’t practice safety in the kitchen and around food.

Eggs and poultry (chicken, turkey et cetera) are a fantastic source for this bacteria, which is why you should always cook your food thoroughly before eating it. Pets can get sick too. This is why there are certain things you ‘never’ ever feed your pets. Human food + pets = bad!

Unlike his tinier self, this plush microbe is adorable and informative, with a detailed tag that tells all about him – where to find him, how to keep him from making you sick, and how to prevent contamination in the home or wherever you might find him.

He’s fairly robust, and can survive where other microbes might not make it. Reptilian pets, like snakes and turtles, but also birds are a prime source of the bacteria too, so you should always, always wash your hands after after care for/petting/handling them. Ew.

He’s definitely bad news, but never fear! With this fuzzy bit of adorable awesomeness, you can keep yourself safe. So next time your mom tells you to wash up, you better listen! It might just keep you from getting sick.

So yes, all kids should be educated about this disease. A great way to introduce them to this would be to show them what it looks like. Give them an image to associate with what they learn. That is why these are not just stuffed plush animals…Giant Microbes has made them a learning tool.
