Of all the species of lizard in the world, the anole (it probably rhymes with cannoli, though it depends on who you ask) is one of the coolest. Why’s that? The anole takes the color-changing ability of the chameleon, and the wall-climbing ability of the gecko and combines them in a third breed that’s entirely separate from those other two. In fact, anoles are more closely related to iguanas. In the lizard world, they are one of the best examples of both convergent evolution and adaptive radiation.
What this means is that different species adapt some of the same traits. And adaptive radiation doesn’t mean the anoles gained the ability to shoot lasers out of their eyes after being doused in radioactive goo. Here’s a good example: say you have populations of anoles on separate islands with different ecosystems. One population will evolve to eat, for example, leaves from trees, while the other population will adapt to subsist on shrubs and low-lying plants. But it’s about more than just what they eat. Anoles on the island where they eat tree leaves will actually grow longer limbs, while the anoles on the island with the shrubberies (Monty Python FTW) will evolve to have shorter legs since they feed on the ground. Pretty cool, huh?
