“How many puppies? 15? Why, Pongo, you old rascal you!” We’re paraphrasing here, but if any of you grew up on Disney movies of yesteryear like we did, maybe this iconic masterpiece (your mileage may vary of course) will be familiar. Still not placing it?
In 101 Dalmatians, Pongo was the good-natured dog owned by Roger, his human, who fathered fifteen of the spotted fur balls on Missus (Perdita in the book that came first). Missus was Roger’s wife’s dog. Quite a family, that lot. Until they were broken up by that mean old bi…er…witch Cruella De Ville. We’ve never seen the live action version, but we imagine Glenn Close did a pretty good job. For us, that scratchy voice harridan with surrounded by a fetid cloud of yellow cigar smoke will always be the nastiest puppy napper of all. But all’s well that ends well. You’ve got talking dogs, inter-species cooperation, etc, all with the humans being none the wiser. Of course they marvel at how their dogs (whom they thought were lost when they ‘ran away’, came back with far more than just the original 15, but a full 99 puppies.
What has that iconic movie got to do with Melissa & Doug’s fantastic and oh-so-adorable plush dalmatian? Not much, other than the fact he ‘is’ one. Their cutie is ‘huge’ too. At 22 inches in length, 32 inches in height, he makes a fantastic and cuddly addition to any loving domestic environment. He won’t sing for you, or risk the English countryside to save his puppies, but you can make up your own adventures. As far as we’re concerned, that’s ten times better than anything the Mouse could turn out.
