“Ahem. Excuse me. Is this thing on?” He taps on the microphone. “So, we’re here today to talk about beavers? Why beavers? Well, for starters, that happens to be what I am. And, as my papa used to say, “Teach what you know.” So if you’re looking for a story about shrews or rabbits or those nutty squirrels, you can mosey right back on out the way you came.” He gives the audience a searching glare, looking grandfatherly yet severe. Not everyone leaves.
“Oh? Some of you are still here? Well good!” He rubs his forepaws together. “Let’s get started shall we? I don’t have a lot of time. The missus is getting on me to repair that dam of ours. So I’ll make this fast.We beavers like our privacy! That’s why whenever we feel threatened, we’ll slap our tails on the water.” He waves his wide, flat tail, so the audience can see it.
“Smack! The noise is like a gunshot.” “What’s a gun?” most of the audience members, who are themselves animals, wonder. “When that happens, we know to dive under the water. And we can hold our breath for at least 15 minutes. Bet that’s more than any of you.” He puffs himself up, looking proud.
“I also understand some of the humans have taken to making plushies out of us. Well, there’s this one here.” He holds up a gorgeous, lifelike, 21-inch long stuffed animal from Hansa. “I understand this one is based off photos of real beavers. Now that’s impressive. Well, for all the habitat they take from us, we have to give the humans credit where credit’s due. This plush beaver is fantastic. In fact, I wouldn’t know it from my own kids.”
His wife storms into the room. “Maynard! You wouldn’t know your rear end from your head! Get back to the pond and fix that dam!” “Uh, yes, right away dear!” Maynard then proceeds to scamper off, leaving the bewildered audience members to gather their belongings and leave.
