Matt Kenseth was born and grew up in Cambridge, Wisconsin. Started racing local tracks at the age of 16, he set a record as the youngest winner in ARTGO Series held previously my Mark Martin, who oddly enough would become his teammate with Roush racing.
Robbie Reiser asked Matt in 1997 to join his team and race in the NASCAR Busch Series. Kenseth went on to capture two top-five and seven top-10 finishes in 21 starts and finished second in the Rookie of the Year.
In 1999 Matt Kenseth expanded his schedule as he made five NEXTEL Cup starts for Roush Racing in the number 17 DEWALT Tools Ford and pulled double duty in a quest for a Busch Series championship, finishing third. 2000 season was Matt’s breakout year for as he joined the NEXTEL Cup Series full-time. He captured his first career victory at the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and earned four top-five and 11 top-10 finishes with a 14th place finish in the championship.
Kenseth, Reiser, and Roush Racing made it all click in 2003 as the No. 17 DEWALT Tools Ford team won the final Winston Cup Championship with a record-setting performance in 2003.
This weekend at Talladega Superspeedway the 17 DeWalt Ford Fusion driven by Matt Kenseth, and the No. 6 UPS Ford Fusion of David Ragan will race Ford’s new FR9 engine for the first time. Sadly Matt didn’t make the chase this year 2009.
