Scampering along the tree branches, the chipmunk (which is technically a squirrel), stops partway to his hole, a walnut in his tiny paws. Glancing down, he sees you and chatters indignantly at you. He’s not being a jerk, chipmunks are just naturally highly protective of their food. You see, unlike us, they don’t just eat and run. Because food is so scarce in the winter, they have to gather nuts and other things that will keep over the long, dark months. Not only that, but their hoarding tendencies help out in forest ecosystems. How? Well, plants have to spread their seeds to grow elsewhere, right? Some plants can’t do this naturally, so depend upon animals who normally eat the seeds or fruit to ‘redistribute’ seeds elsewhere. The same goes for certain types of fungus (they eat the fungi, then the spores are spread about in the chipmunk’s….leavings).

Chipmunks are very clean animals, who dig huge (compared to them) and complex burrows. They’re also rather opportunistic, their diet consisting of seeds, nuts, birds’ eggs,  (some birds will even harass and mob a chipmunk they see near their nest), even nestlings! When you are as small as the chipmunk, you need to either have a major ace in your hand…er, paw, or be fast, wily and cunning. Thankfully the chipmunk is.

And Hansa captures all of this in their flawlessly lifelike Stuffed Animals, which are modeled after real live animals. So, you know you’re getting the very best. At 6 inches in length, this furry little friend is perfect for the nature or forest lover in your life.
