The alligator is one of the most ancient species on the planet – about 200 million years old! This makes them a “living fossil”. Except for their size, they really do look like they just came out of Jurassic Park, don’t they? There are only two species of alligator: American and, if you can believe it, Chinese. The Chinese ‘gators are smaller and better armored than their Western cousins, though they only average 6 to 7 feet in length. American alligators, despite having an unarmored belly, are much, much bigger. As adults, they can reach upwards of 13 to 14.5 feet in length, though there are records of larger ones having existed in modern times. If you think that’s scary, imagine how much bigger these bad boys of the bayou would have been back in the day of the dinosaurs. Makes you shudder, doesn’t it?
But Aurora’s flopsie plush gators, Swampy and Super Swampy are as safe as can be, and twice as fun. One of the biggest parts of an alligator is its head. Alligators have really powerful jaw muscles, so the force of their bites is really strong. The muscles they use to open their big mouths, however, are pretty weak – a grown man could hold an alligator’s mouth shut. But would you want to? I don’t think so!
Made of the highest quality, 100% kid-safe, kid-friendly materials, stuffed Alligator Swampy comes in a 12 inch and in a 28 inch size. Stuffed chock full of beanbag pellets, they’re super soft, super squishy and loads of fun to wrestle and horse around with. With a dark green top and lighter green or yellow underbelly and black and yellow eyes, Aurora’s realistic reptile is a sight to behold.
Real alligators may seem dangerous, but unlike crocodiles, alligators don’t think of humans as food. They’re actually as afraid of us as we are of them, and will usually try to get away if they see a human. Unless that human is attacking it or its nest. Then the mother (the fathers don’t have anything to do with parenting) will certainly take notice!
