Of course the Old English Sheepdog isn’t the only herding dog in the world. You’ve got large and small dogs suited to the task. Naturally we can’t forget the Shetland Sheepdog. Colloquially called the Sheltie, its origins, much like those of the English Sheepdog are unclear. What is clear, is just how adorable Douglas’ own Plush Sheltie is.
Shelties, as you might expect, hail from the Shetland Islands, which are a small island chain off the northeast coast off of Scotland. Beyond that, the fact that they look like a fluffier, longer haired version of Lassie is probably not coincidence. At some point, the breed that was the basis for the Shetland was bred with a Collie. Douglas’ Dixie comes to life as any bright-eyed, loving and sweet-tempered Sheltie would. Just eighteen inches long, she boasts realistic features in addition to her silky soft fur. Of course, that realism doesn’t extend to her leaving surprises on the carpet, or you having to feed her, so…bonus!
By nature, Shelties are, like most other shepherd dogs, loyal, intelligent and eager to learn what you have to teach them. If left to their own devices, they can get a little destructive, but that’s what they have you for, to lend a gentle, loving yet firm hand. Of course, they aren’t nearly as big as the Collie they look like, or even as big as the English Sheepdog or the Border Collie. In fact, they’re downright pint-sized. But this just means you gotta take extra care with her! You’re up to that, right?
