Rats in the world of animation (be it Disney or otherwise) have a long and storied pedigree. Don’t recall any famous animated rats?
Well, let’s start with one of the most famous. Professor Patraic Ratigan from Disney’s 1986 movie, The Great Mouse Detective (which itself was based on a series of kids’ books). Voiced by the memorable Vincent Price, Ratigan was a class act who nearly managed to upstage the Basil Rathbone sound-a-like Holmes (who was actually a mouse along with most other animal characters in the flick). Then you’ve got Brutus, Justin, Jenner, and the leader of the rosebush colony, Nicodemus from Don Bluth’s 1984 dark classic, The Secret of NIMH. And of course we could never forget Templeton, the selfish, gluttonous yet ultimately decent barnyard rat from E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web (and the 1973 movie of the same name).
In short, rats have a massive reputation when it comes to animated cinema, both good and bad. When they’re bad, they’re chillingly and sometimes hilariously evil. When they’re good, they’re really good, and Sunny & Co.’s plush rat is no exception. From nose to rump, he’s 13 inches long, with an additional 13 inches of ratty tail. What? He’s not animated? We beg to differ. Just stick your hand in him (‘cause he’s a puppet after all) and bring him to life. Hah! Whaddya have to say now, smartypants? Oh? You like the idea of bringing a stuffed animal friend to life and telling your own stories? Well, get to it! We don’t want to keep you from telling the next great adventure.
