When it comes to working dogs, you probably know the type. Sheepdogs, sled dogs, hunting dogs – to both chase down and retrieve prey. But what about fish dogs? (Not dogfish. They won’t help you). Fish dogs? Yes, well, water dogs. And in this case, that’s an actual breed. They aren’t a dog/fish hybrid, but they ‘do’ work with their masters, who are often fishermen. Hailing for Portugal, these fuzzy friends are aptly named Portuguese Water Dogs. Rather than retrieve prey like gundogs will do, Water Dogs have the slippery task of herding fish into the waiting nets.
Distinctive soft plush Portuguese Water Dog from Douglas. In Portugal, the dog might also be known as the Portuguese Fishing Dog. In the dog world, PWDs are pretty rare, but they have relatives in the Poodle, among a few other breeds. This means they can come with the curly coat of the poodle, but without shedding. They’re super smart, and have webbed toes, suitable for being a water-logged dog. Unlike the poodle though, he’s solidly built and strong, perfectly put together to help his master bring in the days’ catch.
Douglas captures the charm and unique look of the PWD with their 16 inch long plush Water Dog, Jose. From stem to stern, from snout to chute (forgive us, we couldn’t think of any other way to carry on the alliteration), this PWD has heaps of charm and personality, and makes a fantastic addition to any plush lover’s collection.
