I am willing to bet that you have one of these animals in your very own house. I would also bet that it sleeps in your room. These cool critters can be classified as official snugglebutts. Yes, they love to snuggle, huggle, and snooze.
Today we will find out a little history of the stuffed teddy bear!
Do you know where teddy bears came from? I mean, way back where did the very first teddy bear come from. Someone had to get the idea to make one.
We did a little research and found out that teddy bears were not always around for kids to snuggle. Can you imagine a life without a teddy? I know I can’t, it would be far too lonely.
Ok, here we go waaaaaay back in time…..
Teddy bears came about when Theodore Roosevelt was President of the United States. President Roosevelt was a hunter, but not always a good hunter. He went on one particular hunting trip and failed to kill a bear. I am sure all the bears were happy about that. But, some people thought they would help the President get to kill a bear so, they found a bear cub and brought it to him. The President was far too good of a man to take such an odd gift. He sure wasn’t going to kill it.
Well, one artist named Clifford Berryman decided to draw a cartoon of the President with a lil bear cub. I think they were making fun of him but sometimes people do that when they don’t understand others. Anyway, this cartoon made it into the newspaper known as The Washington Post. After seeing the cartoon, Morris and Rose Mitchom got a silly idea. They made a stuffed toy that looked like the bear in the cartoon and set it in their shops window next to a copy of the cartoon. They named the bear Teddy after the President. This was way back in 1902. That was 109 years ago. Wow, teddy bears have been around loving on kids for a really long time.
At the same time there was a lady named, Margarte Steiff who lived in Germany who was a retired seamstress with a soft toy factory. Well, she also had the idea to make a soft toy in the image of a bear. Now, Ms. Steiff had made other stuffed animals like cats, elephants, and pigs yet had not ever made a stuffed bear. Her nephew came one day and he had designed a bear for her to make. This is where the very famous Steiff bears came from. Ms. Steiff was excellent at sewing and her cute stuffed animals would soon become world famous.
Soon after these 2 people started making their teddy bears, people were buying them like crazy. Who could resist an adorable stuffed bear? Apparently no one. Once these bears hit the market more and more companies started to design their own idea of a cuddly bear.
Look at how many toy companies now make plush bears. These bears also come in almost any color you can think of. Some wear cute clothes. Some wear hats and glasses but, they all have one thing in common….people love them. People of all shapes, sizes, and age have went out hunting to find the perfect stuffed bear that will fit their personality or the personality of a friend they are giving the bear to.
So there you have a little bit about where the first teddy bear came from. Personally, I am really glad that someone thought of making them. Life without them would be so boring. Teddy’s can be your best friend, your play buddy, your nighttime snuggly, and so much more. They are always ready to listen to all your troubles or share in a funny story.
Glad teddy’s are so easy to find…now be sure to give your teddy bear a big hug and maybe even share a bit of their history. I’m betting even teddy would like to know where they came from.
Until next time…Stay fuzzy, wuzzy and snuggly.
